Leonard, Hammond, Thoma & Terrill was established in 1952 as Meyers & Tremper. Throughout their careers, founders Barrie Tremper and Robert Meyers played major roles in establishing and enhancing the local judicial and political infrastructures in Allen County, Indiana. Mr. Tremper, a revered and respected trial attorney, was appointed as Allen County's first chief public defender in 1956, a position he held for more than 30 years. Upon his election as mayor of Fort Wayne, Mr. Meyers departed the firm and later served as an Allen County Superior Court judge. From its inception and modest beginnings, Mr. Tremper endeavored to add talented, sought-after trial attorneys to enhance the firm.
In adding several exceptional attorneys, the firm continued to cultivate a reputation for outstanding representation of diverse clients. Ultimately, the firm was renamed Tremper, Bechert, Leonard & Terrill. In 1991, the firm continued its growth by acquiring a historic landmark building in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne. Many lifelong Fort Wayne residents remember the two-story brick building at the corner of Calhoun and Berry streets as the downtown Walgreens Drug Store (eatery and soda fountain) and later Cunningham Optical. An extensive and carefully planned restoration followed the property acquisition. Since then, the firm has maintained its offices in this impressive and historic building, considered the entry point to the picturesque Calhoun Street Corridor.
